Star Student

Each week  I chose a different student to be the Star Student.  On Monday, they filled out an All About Me page and told the class important things about the themselves.  On Tuesday, they brought in pictures to share with the class.  On Wednesday, they brought in their favorite book and we read it in class.  On Thursday, they picked out their favorite poem from my poetry books or one from home.  On Friday, they brought in a special snack.

Undiscovered Species

As part of our Insect Unit, the students made insects out of items found around their house.  They had to include the characteristics that we learned about insects (3 parts of the body and 6 legs).  They also had to give it a name.

Pot Of Gold Problems

Inside the pot of gold were word problems (addition, subtraction, and missing addend).  Each day during math calendar a different student drew a gold coin out of the pot and read the problem to the class.  The chosen student solved the problem on their white board while the rest of the students did the same at their spot on the carpet.  Then, they shared their answer with the class.

Plant a Problem

All of the flowers started out in the big, brown flower pot.  On the back of each flower was a word problem (addition or subtraction) that the students had to solve.  Each day during math calendar a different student would pick a flower out of the pot, solve the problem, share their answer with the class, and then plant their flower into an individual pot.

Art Show

Throughout the year, we studied a different artist each month.  We discussed the artist's life, style, and technique.  Then we practiced their techniques and created our own works of art.  At the end of the year at graduation, we had an art show where friends and family could admire their work.
